McKenna's visit

Visit always seem to go so fast. Seems like we never take enough pictures but we try. Here are some highlights from the zoo today.

A quick story though. When I picked up McKenna at the airport for this visit two of the flight attendants came up to me to let me know that McKenna helped them out with the other unaccompanied minors. The flight attendants didn't come up together, it was two separate times someone came up to tell me how wonderful she is. She has her teen moments but she is a darn fine young lady! And, she loves her little sister.

All the animals at the zoo and all Riley wants to do is play on the bouncy bridge.

Riley is also a big fan of elephants.

The tigers are usually asleep, got some action today.

In the meerkat tube. McKenna asked me "why are they called that? Do they like looking at their reflections or something?". Took me a minute but I then explained that it was meerkat, not mirrorkat.

Catching up

During the time between the computer dying and us getting the iPad we had a couple of events that we got some pics but had no way to set them on the blog.

Here is a random of Mikka under the tree.

Riley carved up some pumpkins at daycare. She did NOT like the guts at all.

Belated birthday pictures

During Riley's birthday in November, our camera was full, so we couldn't really take any pictures of her cake and party. We had a great time, and my dear friend, Molly, who graceously made the cake, just sent me some pictures.
It's a Yo Gabba Gabba themed cake. If you are familiar with the characters, you'll see what a good job Molly did. Riley still talks about the cake.

Daycare pictures

As you may know, our main computer broke. We are currently using work computers (Sshh!! - don't tell!). We haven't been able to download pictures from the camera, so we've missed a few things.
This past weekend we had Riley's birthday. She's three! We had a few of her friends over for fun and cake. Riley loved that her friends came to see her and keeps saying she wants her party back. We'll have to schedule some play dates.
We did get some pictures taken at daycare. This time they gave us a CD instead of actual pictures, so we can print what we want. And, with the CD, we can post some pictures. Yeah! They are not really our style, but it is after all Riley, so we had to get them.

A day off

Weeelllllll, from "work" anyway. Get to stay home and work! Yay! Yard projects again. So today I finished my cedar tree ring that will double as a flower box in the spring. I plan on doing a few more of these, possibly this weekend.

We got the babus out on her tricycle the other day, playing in the street since the driveway is quite a climb for a 2 (almost 3) year old. Also played with some sidewalk chalk. And by played I mean Riley told me to write stuff and I did.

Some people out there in this world just eat pancakes, we think that is a shame. The Curtis Dojo has completed some scientific research to find out the difference between pancakes and PAAAANCAAAAKES.

Pancakes will create a very specific reaction.

Exhibit 1 - Notice, a happy child, very common, ordinary.

The dogs are 1/2 asleep, some may even say lazy. This all seems very status quo.

PAAAAANCAAAAAAKES create a different reaction altogether, as you can see here.

The other day Krista came across Riley just randomly singing the I Love My Ducks song (after hearing it daily since it is my ringtone for text messages). We tried to get her to sing but the camera shy got her, she did indulge us in a dance though.

Trying to just get Riley talking a little. She normally turns a little shy when we turn the camera on her, but she was chatty tonight so I thought we'd roll a little film. Hope you enjoy. (notice the subtle chauvinism when Riley looks to Krista in the kitchen to say what she wants for dinner.)

What a summer!

We've had quite a summer at the dojo this year. Of course everyone knows about the weather. It's finally given us a slight break this week, but we're still ready for fall, and football!

I for one have had too much nature this summer. I've really enjoyed the garden my wonderful husband insisted we put in, even though he will only eat the cantaloupe we're growing, but we've had a serge in animal action outside. Each night we have frogs that hang out around the deck, and on the windows. Then, if the dogs don't eat all their food, the squirrels will come by and eat it. Last night, we had something walking about the deck. I yelled to Jason, and he said it was a fox. Then, Riley and I came home today to a lizard in the house. Jason wasn't home to catch it, so we talked it into crawling outside. Geesh!

Riley has been getting mosquito bites all summer, so we started also putting bug stray on her each morning. That seemed to work, but didn't keep the bee away, which stung her in the mouth. The day care called, and said it was swollen, but then called back later and said it was moving up her face. We ended up taking her to the doctor, but probably shot the video a little late. It was going down by then, plus she had been riding in the car for while, and was feeling the effects of her Benedryl. I was somewhat panicked from the daycare's description, but then saw her. She handled it like a trooper.

Board Games

Tonight we did a little family night. We were playing Sorry and I had been helping Riley. We let her pull her own card and read the number. Before we new it she was mimicking us and trying to read the entire card. No one knows exactly what she was saying here....your guess is as good as ours.

Riley used my filming her as an opportunity to take my turn! Good thing McKenna has my back. (in all honestly she did not need an opportunity, she tried to take my turn each and every time)

Day of Bowling

We decided to head out of the house and do a little bowling today. Riley had a blast. Every time the ball went down you would turn around to "MY TURN, MY TURN". We had to explain that everyone gets a turn several times today.

The low point for Riley came when she got a strike. She was so upset she didn't get to roll the ball twice.

McKenna said she had a good time but sometimes It's hard to tell with a 12 y/o. She spent more time trying to look cool than actually bowling.

And in this corner....weighing in at 33 and 1 half pound, Riley Jean Curtis, Curtis.

Riley is always coming up to the dojo when I hold classes, she loves to hang out up there and watch the activities. She also likes getting into all the gear.

Here she's thrown on my wrestling shoes and she's ready for some grappling. She is truly a pioneer, not many get geared up while still wearing a dress.

Then she ditched the shoes for some gloves and headgear, try her hand at a little sparring.

She's a jumping maniac and she's been trying to master the summer salt. She did one pretty good one but for the most part she just sort of flops to the side.

The garden is rolling in full swing. Cucumbers are abundant, we've picked 10 so far and we don't think we've scratched the surface. Krista put her flip flop in the picture for scale, the 1 tomato in the picture fell off while staking. We did lose the squash but the watermelon are coming in quite nicely. There are probably 10 watermelon coming and the thing is so big we think there are more we haven't seen yet. Tomatoes? Each bush has too many to count and they grew so big the cages and plants fell over, we've had to add stakes to keep them up right! Good times.

The New Ride

It's been over a month now and we are pretty happy with the new ride. Looks nice, drives nice, more room and not too bad on the MPG's. The cars name is Opie Teema.

We took the new ride to the Zoo today to see some animals. We made it about 3 hours in the oppressive heat! We've just been trying to get pics of the animals we haven't had a chance to get yet. The Red Panda!

Jason was lost for a bit, finally found him taking a nap.

The garden was started a little late in the year but it is coming along nicely. The difference between Memorial Day and this fine 4th of July weekend is crazy.

McKenna had one of her friends spend the night. The only thing to deeply Riley's obsession with her sissy is to add a friend. The big girls went out into the pool, so Riley had to also.

Summer is here

Summer has arrived as I'm sure you all know. McKenna arrives tomorrow and we are SOOO excited! Riley has been telling her teachers at daycare that Sissy is coming every day.
We've finally got the pool to a swim-able place, so we thought we'd let Riley try it out.

If you remember, the first year in the pool was tense (... for Mama :)

Last year, I think Riley cried most of the time, or held on very tight to who was holding her.

This year, we seem to have a swimmer. Riley and her daddy have been in the pool twice and she's loved it. Jason said we'll have to keep a close eye on her because she's a dare-devil.

Riley also got a hat and pretty dress for summer. The hat is a little small, but it was only $1!!

But this was no Lazy Sunday. Busy busy busy in the dojo, or more accurately this time of year 'out' of the dojo. The herb garden (make sure you pronounce that H, it's just fun!) has been such a hit and the tomato plant is growing so much I finally talked Krista into a small raised garden. More than anything it was an excuse to hit up the Genghis Grill for lunch, conveniently located across the street from Lowes. :)

This is just a simple 4 ft by 8 ft raised garden. We've got about 11 plants in there all spread out and ready to grow. More tomato's! Peppers, watermelon (fun fact about the watermelon, did you know that if you don't know the words to a song on the radio you can just mouth watermelon over and over again and it will look VERY believable, what a clever fruit!), cucumbers and several other things I will never eat. I think pretty much anyone who is reading this knows what a picky eater I am so no further explanation should be required. Krista has promised some homemade and fresh spaghetti and pizza sauces. Yay!

Start with just some 2x4x8's. And make a box. Just a little weed barrier at the bottom.

Then we add a lot of good soil.

Here is a video of the cicadas, you may have to turn it up, that's more about our camera than it is about them. We are in a mild area of middle TN for these too, just a bit south and they are much more annoying. That noise just never goes away for about a month. Or, we have the noisiest trees in the world.

Before the storms came back today, we decided to go to the park. There was an older girl there, so Riley followed her around. Riley climbed up the ladders for the first time.

Riley also sat on the big swings all by herself.

We've also been working on Riley riding her bike all by herself. I think we finally have it. We still need to work on her steering.

Tennessee Cicadas

The thirteen year cicadas are back in Tennessee this year. I remember when they were here in 1998. My roommate Debbie carried a tennis racket to hit them when they attacked. They were everywhere! They have just started to emerge and you can hear their buzzing when driving down the highway, and in our backyard as I write this.

The dogs have been crazy about them. Mikka and Raimo have been digging for about a month, and run out to a certain tree in the back whenever they go out. We're hoping they won't get sick from eating them.

Since I am my father's daughter, I had to take some photos to commemorate and share.

We'll post some more pictures when they get really gross. yikes!!

Sunday at the zoo

Today, everyone was back to reasonable health and the weather was nice, so we decided to go to the zoo! We first saw the zebras, and got pretty close.

One of the alligators was relaxing in the water, so Riley got a real good look at him.

Riley's favorite part of the zoo seems to be the water. There are several ponds, and running water that she finds fascinating.

The giraffes were feeling a little frisky. The girl giraffe kept walking away, so everything luckily stayed rated G.

As you can see the winds have been blowing, this is not some kind of camera trickery and honestly I can't say that I've spent a whole lot of time staring at the angle of this tree, but I'm pretty sure it didn't look like this!

It is true that April showers bring May flowers though, everything is coming together quite nicely.

Here are the peppers, tomatoes and strawberries we're trying this year.

And here is the herb garden, I plucked some today to make some fresh home made chicken soup for everyone!

This week has been a rough one, the Dojo is sick! All of us. Riley started it all off about 1 hour before the start of the Chicago concert last Saturday night. We cancelled the sitter, Krista stayed home and I went on to the show with our friends. Concert was good and the outdoor amphitheater at the http://www.fontanelmansion.com/ is a pretty cool place to watch a show. ZZ Top and Steely Dan are coming later this summer (not at the same time).

So.....what to do around the house when everyone is sick? Maybe we should take our boredom out on those in the family who are not sick, the puppies!!!!!

Mikka asked that I present for the record that she typically does not just lay around with her feet in a bowl pretending to eat food that isn't there.

Raimo also wanted to be on record, he was in fact not cold and he did not request a blankey.

You know Riley was quite proud of all her work disturbing the puppies, she's becoming quite the ham. Pretty sure that's Krista's fault.

The squirrels are getting braver! They have figured out which tree's they can outrun the dogs to and they've been hanging out on the deck a little.

The Pull-Up

So, Riley seems close to using the potty. She has had some success, but seems to have decided not to do it again. Jason decided to bring on the bribes, and purchases some pull-ups. Riley calls them panties, so we corrected her. She was so excited and danced around the room for a while.

The puppies as always were very excited about the happenings.

Riley later decided she should have her pants on. She's getting better, but doesn't quite have the hang of it.

McKenna was out for Spring Break, since the WY break is different than the TN break she had to spend all her time with her dad. An opportunity any 12 y/o would die for. Or maybe that's die from?

Since the weather was good most of the week there was much playing outside.

Krista found a HUGE web in one of our trees, all kinds of cacoons in there.

The girls did their hair. Here's Riley rockin a pony tail that lasted about 13 seconds.

Well, first of all, Happy Halloween from the Dojo! We are enjoying a quiet afternoon of basketball (at least the Brackemyre side of the family is). Riley is still calling it "football," but we are working on it.
The weather has gotten colder, so we are staying inside.
This is probably Riley's favorite shirt. If she's given a choice, she usually picks it out. It is size 18 months, so it's a little short. Riley doesn't seem to mind.
Today for lunch, we had pizza, as you can see by Riley's face and shirt. We thought we'd get a picture before we cleaned her up.
We should have pictures of both girls next week. McKenna arrives in 6 days!!!!

1st Day of Spring

Although, it does seem like spring has been around a couple weeks here in Nashville. We've been working in the yard, trying to enjoy this nice weather while we have it. Should reach 79 today!!!!

Riley does try to help a little, but mostly her attention is drawn to throwing rocks, chasing the puppies and playing in the dirt. Yesterday we picked her up some sidewalk chalk, I think she's hooked.

Every day when we get home all we here is "outside" "outside" "outside". She likes to go out on the deck or out in the front.

We also picked up some solar lights for the walkway. :)

Spring is here!

Spring has arrived at the Dojo. Jason has already started his outside projects. Riley, of course, is always a big help, and likes to be outside with her daddy. She monitored the rocks and made sure none got outside the perimeter.

Here's the finished product. Later, we (Jason) will add some flowers.

Riley keeps talking more and more. She has also started to sing by herself, and has even made up a song or two. She is counting to ten as well, but either leaves out or stops at four. She must not like that number. Here is her performance from this morning. (if you have a very keen ear you may pick up a little of the abc's.

Last, but not least, McKenna will be here for Spring Break in a couple weeks, and we CANNOT wait! It always feels so great to have both girls at home. I think it might blow Riley's mind. She's so obsessed with McKenna and her pictures, she may not be able to handle the real thing :)

Another Curtis Dojo Story

There are many times when people ask "why haven't you updated the blog?" The answer is simple, the dojo is fueled by comments of how cute the babus is. So if you want more stories you'd better become more active with the comments. Riley is very particular about what we post, when and also why we post.

Let's start with a little Valentine's day. I asked Krista if she wanted to go out for dinner but it being on a Monday this year it's just easier to cook in. I tried out a new recipe and nailed it. Bacon and panko encrusted tilapia, sweet potato mash, it was delicious. Krista said she liked it but she could do without the bacon. What? No bacon? pffft!

Of course Krista also received some flowers and plenty of candy for the occasion.

Riley looooooves the puppies! She cannot get enough. Raimo has started going to bed at about 5:30pm just to stay out of her way.

With the weather changing Riley comes home every day and wants to go outside. She loves to chase the puppies around the yard. This pic took forever to take, getting a dog and a child to sit still for a couple seconds in the same place at the same time is a minor miracle.

Here's the neighbors dog in our yard. This is the same neighbor who came over in the summertime to threaten me. I don't think that went as well as he'd planned in his head. :)
Anyways, these neighbors have complained about our dogs when we are one of only 2 family's who have the invisible fence. I took pics of their dogs coming in our yard over time and went down to have a little chat with him. They had a fence finally installed about a week ago.

What's New in the Hood

Wednesday, 18 degrees and snowing so bad it brought the city to it's knee's. Sunday, mid-60's and time to bust out the grill for the 1st time in too long.

Today we are grilling some Ribeye's and Pineapple. Ribeye's were marinated in some fresh blended pineapple, soy sauce, vinegar and some special spices. Pineapples were dredged through some buttermilk and seasoned up with a cinnamon and sugar mix. Let's bring those steaks to a nice 135 degrees for dad and 145 for mom. That's medium rare and medium for those non grillers out there.

Riley has been picking out her own clothes lately, stripes and checkers are some kind of fashion statement. Momma does not approve but daddy thinks she's doin just fine.

Here is the grill master now. Actually daddy is still on grill duties while Riley walks around and says "hot" and then blows on the grill. You can still see the remains of snow on the deck.

With the snow brought many day care closings. AGAIN! So we had a little daddy/daughter time on Thursday.

Riley is about ready for a new big girl bed and McKenna is looking to get out of the bunk beds in her room. So we took the top bunk out of McKenna's and gave it to Riley, 2 happy girls with 1 simple move. Here's Riley in her new spread!

No day at home would be complete without torturing a puppy. Today's victim, Mikka. Actually Raimo has stayed out of harms way lately by going to bed about any time Riley is up. Poor pup has to hide out in his own home.

A proud day indeed

Today started off just like any other day, nice weather, pretty dark out when we leave for work. We dropped off the babus and headed on down the road. Work was normal, uneventful. Came home, stopped at the store for some milk and bread. Got home, made some tomato soup while Riley and Krista shared a grilled cheese sammich. (as Riley calls them) Afterward we sat on the couch to watch some DVR'd programming on the ole tube.
Riley was running a muck, causing the ever so slightest amount of trouble. She was climbing on the couch and messing around when I decided to tickle her tummy a little bit.
Now, this next part is 100% true, you can ask Krista.

As I was tickling her, totally unsolicited Riley pulled off a near perfect armbar. Typically we don't like to see the feet crossed because that makes the knees go apart, more space = not a tight arm bar. But Riley, almost instinctively pinched her knees together. That's genetics folks, not training.

Daddy was proud indeed!

snow ... again

We have another beautiful snow fall this morning. Riley's day care is open two hours late, so I'm waiting for her to wake up. I think the storm is about done, and we've gotten about 3 inches, which is the most so far this year.

Here's the front of the house. The tracks are from Jason's truck when he left.

We had some excitement on Sunday. Jason noticed several vultures flying around our property. I didn't get a final count, but it seemed like about twenty. The pictures don't really due it justice. I had a hard time zooming in and getting a picture. Jason, being the brave one, walked out there to investigate. He said there was some small animal that had died, but he couldn't tell what it was. The birds were very large, and Jason thought the wingspan was about 5 feet. They hung around for several hours.

Several landed in the trees, and hung out for a while.

One was showing off, but spreading it's wings for the others.

When Riley was younger, she did not like the dojo. She cried whenever we went up there, and set her down. Now, she loves it. Riley goes up when Jason has his classes and watches.

We've gotten a lot of snow this year for Tennessee. The schools have been closed about six days so far. We've been pretty lucky and made it to work most days, but are tired of the drivers. The puppies like the snow though.

Riley got a tent from her Meemaw and Papa a while back. It came with a tunnel that Riley never really got into. I thought since she was older, we'd try it out. She loved it.

About 24 hours out now. If you would have told me when I was in high school that the Oregon Ducks would play for the National Title I would have laughed you out of the room. Had you told me that 10 years ago I would have thought "yeah, that would be nice." Even at the start of this year it didn't really seem like a reality. We don't have the history of a USC, OH ST, BAMA etc etc. This has been a great season and of course I hope we play well tomorrow and come out on top!!!

It has been a very rough Christmas for me. I spent the night of Christmas Eve up with Riku after what appears to be a stroke. His breathing was pretty crazy and he was wondering around looking like he was going to pass out. Not much sleep. After we did the Christmas morning thing I took Riku into the emergency vet. Not much they could see or do, blood work and all tests seemed normal, other than the breathing. They gave him a "cosmic cocktail" (puppy narcotic) to try and settle him down but that didn't work, by the time we got him home he was wide eyed and possible halucinating. I took some pictures that would be very funny had he made a turn for the better, but now they do not seem funny anymore. He passed away on Christmas day, he went outside and didn't come back. I found him in the snow. Today I buried him and said goodbye.

Riku has been with me through a TON of things. He came with me from Wyoming and what was probably the most difficult decision of my life, moving away from McKenna. He was with me through the easiest decision, marrying Krista.

He loved to swim. It was funny at different times to have a neighbor come and say "umm...do you know your dog goes swimming when you are not home?"

He loved to talk when he was younger, I remember my neighbor in Spring Hill say that when she would garden in the early morning he would come to the fence and chat with her. If you are not familiar with Husky chat, it can be entertaining.

Riku will be missed a great deal.

Having Christmas without McKenna is always tough. She is definitely the MVP of the Dojo. We did receive her school pictures in time for Christmas and she is getting more and more beautiful by the minute. (and you guys wonder why I train to beat people up?)

Jason's Christmas holiday started a day early as Riley came down with the crud on Wednesday afternoon. I worked from home that day, since I had my laptop out, Riley decided she'd get some work done too.

Sneezing and working, that is what her day consisted of. Weelllll, there were a couple naps in there also.

Nashville is certainly not known for snow on Christmas, but this year we got some! Here are some pics from around the house. Not the several inches those of us who have lived in Oregon, Indiana, Ohio, Colorado or Oklahoma are used to, but we'll take it.

News of the Oregon Ducks making the Natty meant just one thing in the Curtis Dojo this year. Nobody had to stretch to think of what to get Jason for Christmas! It was darn near a 100% sweep of Ducks stuff this year. GO DUCKS!!!

I had already received a sweatshirt and a t-shirt featuring the back to back Pac 10 Champions The Mighty Fighting Oregon Ducks, but what would be in store for me today????

Krista liked her gifts, I hope. :) I went 100% off script and on my own. She had asked for bags of cash and slippers. I went with a coffee grinder and some much needed kitchen essentials. She also got a nice big gift certificate to a spa in the area. I have no idea what goes on in those places but I'm sure she'll be happy. My mother decided to give Krista exactly what she wanted, every box that was sent had cash in it, a pretty good haul!

But, I fear none of you came here to see what I got. Or even what Krista got. So let's turn our attention to the star of the Dojo, Riley.

Riley's love for "the wheels on the bus" is greatly known. We just couldn't resist a bus that sings wheels on the bus. They don't know the verse about the Ducks on the bus say we're #1, we're #1, we're #1???? What kind of bus is this?

A Ducks bear, it says "Go Ducks" and it also plays a little of the Ducks Marching band.

Riley got a couple of puzzles, one from Big sister McKenna and one from her Momma.

Last but not least Riley got a new baby to take care of. She loves her baby.

Christmas Season is upon us

The holidays are a busy time. One of the 1st things we needed to do is get a new camera. Ours was old and just not getting the job done anymore. To prove that we got a new camera, here is a picture of the old one. How would I do that if I didn't have a new camera? Huh, tell me that?

And here............drum roll please......is the NEW CAMERA **crash**bang**thundersound**

Tried to get the dogs to pose in front of the tree but the command "sit in front of the tree!" doesn't work quite as well as "get on the blanket" does. (not that 'get on the blanket' yields tremendous results.)

Riley is getting the camera down great. She loves to take pictures. Says "cheeeeeese" with the best of them. Then of course she asks for a piece of cheese afterward.

Of course you really need to visit Santa, every kids dream. Riley had so much fun she could hardly control herself!!!!

Snow day!

The Nashville area has gotten its first snow of the season. I think we got about 2 inches in our area. All the schools, and daycares are closed, so we are taking a snow day. It's a little too cold for Riley, but the puppies seem to think it's okay.

Riley's latest obsession is the computer. She loves to watch "The Wheels on the Bus" video. We often find her sitting in the chair typing away and clicking on the mouse. One day she had three internet windows up, and had googled M & Ms, which seem appropriate.

Riley also loves to harass Riku. He may have been hiding from her on the other side of the coffee table, so Riley just scooted in to get closer.

McKenna is in All-City Children's choir in Cheyenne. Last week they went to Washington, DC for the Capital's Christmas tree lighting ceremony. They sang some songs and did an awesome job. Below is a link to their performance.

Birthday Party

For the 2nd year in a row Riley had a birthday, she's 2 for 2. Typically you would expect 2 birthdays out of a 2 year old so we are on the right track, raising her good!

Many people came to the party, Molly, Anne, Rob and Carrie, Andrew and Mitzi, Brian and Shanna and quite a few little ones roaming around. It was pretty crazy and there was a Duck game on so the pictures are few and far between. And by few and far between I mean the ones you already saw is all we got! I blame Chip Kelly. Had he done what he was supposed to do we'd have blown out Cal and I would not have been having multiple heart attacks!

Anne, for the 2nd straight year, seemed to have the favorite toy of the day. A mini microwave that works. Riley LOVES it. She also loves her some weeble! Riley also has a new leap-top that we got with the gift certificate. We make great use of the Hello Kitty bubbles every night at bath time. Coloring books are also now a nightly activity in the Dojo.

For the record, the Ducks won and they are still #1 in the country, all is right in the Dojo!

Riley turned two years old on Thursday. She took cupcakes to daycare, and wore her birthday girl shirt. The first words out of her mouth when we got in the car were "cupcake! cupcake!" They seemed to make quite an impression.

When we got home, Riley opened her presents from the grandparents.

Riley identified each item as she pulled it out.

Riley pulled out her Elmo pillow, and gave him a big hug. She said "my Elmo!"

Riley also got some shoes - one of her favorite things.

We have been having fun this fall at the Curtis Dojo. Riley is getting older and is able to do more this year. Riley's daycare had a few activities for Halloween. On Friday, they were allowed to dress up. Her class had a party and went trick or treating around the daycare. We bought Riley's butterfly costume about a month ago. Riley will play with it, but had refused to get in it. Jason managed to put it on her once, and she had a total melt down. This week he tried again with a little more success.

So Friday, Riley was pretty much the only child in her class without their costume on. When I picked her up though, her teacher did say Riley wore it during trick or treating, and even put the top on once. Riley was assigned cookies for her party, so my friend Molly, the queen of all things yummy, came over to help. I was very supportive and watched most of the time. Our last piece of news is that we have painted the game room. I'm finding that once you paint one room, the next one looks funny. Jason heard about a great pumpkin patch right around the corner from us. It's Honeysuckle Hill Farm in the town just north of us (http://www.honeysucklehillfarm.com/). They have a corn maze, hayrides, trains, petting farm, a corn box, and a pumpkin patch. So today, we checked it out.

Riley liked the corn maze, so we walked through it twice.

The corn box was a big box full of corn kernals. Riley wasn't interested, even when Jason went in with her.

They had a huge playground area. Riley went down a huge slide by herself. She said "Woah!" when she got off.

Riley really seemed to like the petting zoo. She wasn't sure about the cow until Jason said to pet it like she does the puppies. Riley said "puppy!" then pet the cow.

Riley was too tired to help pick out her pumpkin. We lasted about 75 minutes at the pumpkin patch then Riley fell asleep.

Riley finally got to go to McDonalds! One of Jason's work-out buddies' daughter was having a small party. Riley didn't care for the chicken nuggets, but liked the fries and chocolate milk. Riley really enjoyed climbing. She's been climbing all over the house, so she was ready to go.

Jason helped her down the first time, but Riley quickly got the hang of it.

So Riley is getting to be a pretty good talker. She tells us lots of stuff - about 60% we even understand. I remember when my niece, Taylor, was about this age. She would say something her mom didn't understand. Taylor would have to say the word to everyone in the family while we tried to figure it out.

Riley yells 'BUUUHHHH' everytime we either see a bus, or when we pass the place we say one the day before. She can also say the puppies' names: Riku ('eeeeuuuuu'), Raimo ('moooe' or 'amoooe' - it's hard to tell), and Mikka ('num' - not sure where that came from). Riley will also imitate what we say. She's gone out to the deck and clapped her hands yelling 'NUM! NUM', trying to get Mikka to come back.

Tonight Riley wanted to share my drink, so I pulled out the straw. She pointed and said 'juice!' 'No', I told her, 'this is tea'. She smiled and pointed at her mouth 'teeeeee!' (meaning teeth). Being the clever mom I am, I thought I'd call it something else so she'd know it's different. So I said 'no, it's iced tea.' Riley then showed me her eyes, and every body part she could name. I guess we'll have to work on the tea. She really liked it though.

We are always busy here at the Curtis Dojo. We have abandoned the highchair. Riley started to climb in and out so now we have a booster seat. She seems to like being "at" the table instead of beside it.
Aside from picking her nose, Riley has started what some would call the "terrible twos." When getting upset, Riley throws herself down on the ground kicking and screaming. We have found putting her into her time-out chair puts a quick end to the episode, so hopefully we're moving forward. But, I'm sure this is not the end.

Riley has also found a new spot to hang out. Usually when dinner is being cooked, she sits in the cabinet next to me. Her friends also come to hang out.

Thank you Gramms & Gramps for the box of clothes. Riley loved the box. We loved the clothes. Hopefully some day it will be cool enough down here to actually wear long sleeves. :)

And finally, we promise to blog more so Aunt Michelle doesn't have to yell at us.

what we've been up to

Well, we'll blame our internet being out, and visitors for our lack of updates on the blog. We've had a busy summer. McKenna flew out on Sunday after what felt like a short stay. She got a cell phone right before coming out here, so she perfected her texting all summer. Jason's parents also visited for about three weeks. They parted their 28 foot (I think) RV in our back yard. We had four adults, two kids and five (yes FIVE!) dogs.

Gramms and Gramps got Riley a new bike.

Here are Riley and Solitude. They became pretty good buddies. Our dogs kept a pretty close eye on the new puppies to make sure they didn't do anything to Riley.

Gramms, Gramps and McKenna went to the Smokey Mountains for a few days.

Before McKenna left, we took the girls to Sears to get some pictures taken. This year did not go as well as the last. Riley was not at all interested and cried most of the time. We got about three or four good pictures.

Riley got a new outfit from her Meemaw & Papa. It fits her now, and it's finally warm enough outside to wear it. We need to work on the modeling part though ...

I help move the clothes from the washer to the dryer, and pull the clothes out of the dryer to fold.

My big sister McKenna has a rocking chair. I'm using it while she's not here. She's too big for it anyway ;) It's just about my size. My mommy and daddy keep telling me to sit down, but I think it's really funny to stand up ... especially when they keep telling me not to.

My mommy and daddy also keep telling me I have to brush my teeth (nag, nag, all the time).

I am very glad my mommy and daddy got me these cool puppies, they are very usefull!

1st off, Riku guards my toys, he makes sure no one comes near them but me. When he's asleep I just place the ones I want him to guard around him. Back off my stash people!

2nd use for the puppies is a lounge chair!

Ahhhhh, just relaxing on my puppy. Uh, can somebody pass me the milk please? Can a lady get an animal cracker up in this joint?

They are also good for my ground game, my daddy says my brajillion-du-bitsu needs to stay tight.

Krista and I watch Jeopardy pretty much every night. We watch it enough that Riley is now getting into it. No matter what she is doing she will acknowledge all the daily doubles and final jeopardy nightly. You'll notice the head snap when the song starts, a slow build up to some rocking and leg stomping, then the famous Babus Wiggle midway through the final jeopardy theme song, that is her go to move. On the daily double the head snap isn't as pominant du to camera placement, but we did catch the clapping for the contestants.

I think Riley has almost officially recovered from her first virus. She was home for a few days. I'll spare you the gross details :) She went back to daycare today and has moved up to the toddler room. Riley has learned some new tricks in the last month. One of her favorite activities is to climb. She climbs the stairs, the chairs, the couch, her toys ... just about anything.

Riley is also starting to stack her blocks.

Usually once she stacks a few, she claps. We still need to work on the stacking other things on top of the blocks.

And Riley has started reading her books to herself. She likes her two books she got from Gramms for Christmas.

Our new washer and dryer finally arrived!!! Laundry has never been so much fun. Riley likes them too. She can see her reflection and watch the clothes go around. Riley even gave them a kiss (as we all did :)

Christmas at the Dojo happened a few days early this year. McKenna had to fly back to Wyoming on Christmas Eve, so we opened presents on the 23rd.

McKenna helped Riley open her presents.

McKenna got a stereo that she can use with her Ipod. It's pretty loud. We'll see how it goes over the summer :)

we've been pretty busy lately. we had a small party for Riley's birthday on the 21st. Aunt Molly (seen below) made Riley a bear cake, since she's Riley-bear. we were quite amazed at it.

Riley has gotten more interested in the puppies, especially Mikka. Riley has been leaning over trying to kiss her. Mikka likes Riley, and she laughs. Riley sometimes loves Mikka a little too much. Mikka has been a good sport about it and suffers through.

Riley, being the big one year old she is, has graduated to the big girl car seat! She gets to turn around and see the world. We started off a little shaky though. Riley has starting saying 'bye.' After I put her in the car, she said 'bye!' I said bye back, and made her cry. Then on the way to day care, she was trying to figure out how to get out of the car seat since I was obviously right there and tourturing her as she just sat helplessly. The last couple days have been better. I think she's getting the hang of it.

Today is Riley's birthday! She wore her birthday girl shirt to daycare that Aunt Molly got her.

Once we got home, Riley opened her presents from Gramms, Gramps, Meemaw and Papa. For some reason, the video of that isn't loading. I'll keep trying. Gramms and Gramps got Riley some puppets which we'll have lots of fun with. Jason is already trying to scare the puppies with them. Meemaw and Papa got Riley a doll and some clothes. Riley pulled the baby out, and bit her face. Riley of course enjoyed the box, wrapping paper, and cards the best.

After dinner, we gave Riley a cupcake.

Towards the end she was getting tired and got cupcake all over. She took a bath.

Well, this morning we took the babus to get tubes put in her ears. We arrived at 6:00 am, and waited until 8:30. Riley wasn't allowed to eat, but did very good. Of course as we were waiting, everyone stopped to say hi and tell us how cute she is.

Last Friday was Boss's Day. My great department took me to lunch and got me some balloons. Riley had some fun chasing them around the house.

Riley loves getting into the basket that holds her diapers. She particularly likes the diaper rash cream for some reason.

And lastly, Riley has been interested in feeding herself lately. I let her have a try the other day. Eating the spoon, Riley has figured out. Eating the food on the spoon is still a challenge.
