More BJJ in the Dojo

Another week, another 2 sessions of Brazilian Jui Jitsu for the girls! 10 year olds learning how to defend them selves and lay a serious beatdown on any boys that come wihtin their perimeter! I still think we average more "owies" than the typical dojo.

Let's start with some shrimping.

Last week we learned the Kimura from guard, this week we start with the Americana from side.

Then a Kimura from side, starting to put some flows together. Notice that McKenna is still more interested in being on camera than in a submission.

Here's McKenna putting a Kimura on Rachel.

Here's a pretty sloppy finish! (Daddy!!!! This is only week 3, give us a break)

At the end I turned them loose to do some live grappling. Since we don't have to much in our arsenol yet the goal is to stay on top if you are on top OR get on top if you are on bottom. McKenna was able to get 2 sweeps in the 1 minute round.

Rachel retruned the favor and got a sweep on McKenna, if you watch it almost looks like McKenna is having more fun letting Rachel sweep her, gotta find a way to get those cometitive juices flowing. McKenna was also able to get past Rachel's guard once! (During the 43-45 second range you can see McKenna acting like her mommy!)

McKenna and Riley

Here are some pics of Riley and McKenna hanging out in the living room getting some play time in!!

See how much I love my big sister!!!!

OK, that's a little better.

Weeeeeeeeeee!

Awwwwww.

I WILL NOT CHANGE THAT DIAPER!

OK, she's clean, I will play with her again.

My little sister looks up to me.

And smiles at me all the time.

More activity in the pool.

Summers in Tennessee are HOOOOOOOOT. This past weekend was no exception. I'm hoping this year cools off a bit. Normally the pool is refreshing until mid August when it gets about 90+ in the pool. August has come early this year, after working in the yard and moving my 2 truck loads of rocks I was hoping for a nice refreshing dip. Still refreshing but it feels a lot like bath water!

Here we have McKenna cleaning up the pool. Diving the 4.2 feet to the bottom to scoop up the leave.

Here we have McKenna acting like a goof ball.

"aaahhhhhhhhhhhh"

Of course the other main staple in the dojo is the puppies. Now that Riley is crawling she's getting more involved with them.

Riley is getting more comfy in the pool, her fists are unclenched and she has traded in her serious stare for a couple laughs with her big sister.

OWIE....giggle giggle....OWIE...giggle giggle

Those are the sounds of 10 year old girls taking over the Dojo for their 1st week of Brazilian Ju Jitsu training. McKenna and her friend Rachel have started their journey down the martial arts road. The girls have both had 2 - 1hr 15 min classes and they are doing great. So far we are early in the basics. Stance, a little footwork, 1 guard pass and how to get guard back. Today we learned our 1st submission.

Here we have McKenna at the start of the most basic guard pass. I've been struggling with both girls getting the concept of keeping their weight on their opponent while passing. They are getting better.

Rachel had her guard passed in this drill and she's bumping her hips trying to get it back, she's got McKenna back in 1/2 guard, 1 more bump to go!

McKenna is striking from guard here, Rachel has pushed McKenna's hand off her chest to the mat. Sniff sniff, can you smell that????

Yup, BOOM...It's a Kimura! (thanks John Madden for the commentary)

These next 2 pics illustrate what happens when overdramatic 10 year olds act like they are getting thrown across a room when they get their hips pushed a bit. The giggles came long and hard after this one!

They goof off, I reign them in. Drill Time!!!

Hips are of great importance in BJJ, here we drill pushing off 1 foot to get our bodies perpendicular to our opponent, opening them up for our many options from guard.

Keep that tushy tight to the wall, good job McKenna!

Back to work! Now Rachel's on top throwing the punches while McKenna sets up the Kimura.

Here we've got the Kimura locked up and we're moving sllloooooowwwwwllly toward the tapout. 1st submissions we move slooooooooow.

But they are still girls, so it's all smiles during the 10 year old classes in the Dojo. Not the tightest Kimura I've ever seen. (come on dad, cut us some slack,it's day 2!)

Wow, what's that flooring?? Is that bamboo?? Why yes it is.

just wednesday

First of all - here's Riley pretty new dress (and her duck).

Next, Riley has acquired the wonderful skill of spitting.

Then, lastly, Riley has been squirming and shuffling around for a few weeks now. She has been able to get to what she wants, but now, she has found a new method.

Happy Birthday Krista!!!

The wife and mother of the dojo has a special day, June 17th, 2009! It's Krista's birthday. Krista is many things around the dojo, a best wife, the best friend, the momma, head chef, warden, and gate keeper of the looney (me)! (how many people would put up with me? Not many!)

Here is what Krista wanted for her birthday, she will know she is getting this as soon as she reads this sentence. Michael Buble (pronounced - my-kah booh-blah) is one of Krista's faves. My-kah booh-blah meets madison square garden. CD + DVD, what?? A DVD with my CD??? WAHOOOOO!!!!!

Booh-blah!!
booh-blah!!
booh-blah!!

As part of the master plan we had to get the babus away from the momma long enough to get some pics. This task was left to McKenna. She soon learned how hard it is to get a babus to cooperate for picture taking. But I think you'll get the point here!

1st we have to read it and make sure it says what we intended...

Then we lay it out flat and try to get the wrinkles out.......

Now we hold it open in our lap!

((and then you smile))

huh?

OH yeah...I LOVE YOU MOMMA!!!!!!!

Good thing Riley looks like her momma! Babus with a goatee and a shaved head just doesn't work so much.

Riley has just about figure out how to crawl. She definately knows how to get around and is interested in everything non-baby.

See how innocent she looks? "What? I'm just sitting her playing with my rattle?"

Ahh, nobody's looking. I'll check out this basket.

McKenna has been reading some to Riley.

Riley's usually more interested in eating the book.
