The Garden is Growing

Since this is the 1st year I've grown things from seed I am constantly reminding myself that at any time I may walk out there to find nothing alive! But so far we are looking pretty good.

On the right hand side we have the raised garden. Tomato, peppers, cucumber, watermelon and radishes.

On the left you can see some rows starting to form (the darker soil).

The raised garden up close. If you can see the tombstone in the middle there, we lost one of the tomato's. :( There is one more not looking so great so we may be down to 12.

And the non-raised side. Trust me, there are things coming up they are just not quite big enough to see just yet. From front to back we will ultimately have 4 rows of corn, 2 rows of lettuce, 2 rows of green beens, 2 rows of carrots, a row of broccoli and 3 zuchini plants.

Here are the zuchs.

This is the 1st row of green beans.

Couple of the tomato plants.

Happy fun easter night turned into a major melt down

We hard boiled up some eggs and busted out the coloring kit that we let Riley pick out for some good old fashion family night of fun.
Riley started out with a yellow egg. She was very intense while slowly stirring the egg around.

What has 2 thumbs and loves coloring eggs?????

THIS GIRL!!!!!!!

And after the coloring.....the painting phase.

After happy fun easter night was winding down we had to give the babus a bath as she managed to get color on pretty much every finger, her face, shirt and just about every place you could imagine. And a few places you probably can't imagine. Now those of you who have witnessed a full melt down know that Riley can be pretty sensitive. Having a 3 y/o that doesn't fuss very often and listens pretty well is great, but when she goes she really goes. Tonights melt down came on without warning and lasted about 40 minutes. Krista got a minute or so on camera.

YouTube Video

Hopefully next time she wont eat the paint.

Tub o Rain

All the kids are playing with tub o rain this year, and I'm no different! For about 4 years now we've had 3 - 55 gallon rain barrels for some of our various flower gardens. With the expansion of the vegetable garden this year we needed MORE water. McKenna and I trotted off to get 5 more rain barrels this morning. We went over to Nashville Barrel and Drum and had 5 rain barrels all loaded up when the GREAT staff asked if I'd ever considered tub o rain. He pointed to the corner and my eyes lit up!!!
TUB O RAIN

Tub o rain holds 275 gallons of rain water! Tub o rain costs about 1/2 the price of 5 rain barrels plus it already has a water spout. I had to to put a few pieces of PVC pipe together to make it garden hose ready, but much less effort than 5 rain barrels. No cutting required!
How does tub o rain work you ask? I had to run some PVC from a rain gutter all the way around the deck.

Since tub o rain is gravity fed we just had to make sure the pvc was always going down. All in all a pretty quick and easy project. Tomorrow we have a couple loose ends to tie up. Hopefully it rains on Thursday like it's supposed to and we can see how long it takes to fill tub o rain. 275 gallons should go a pretty long way.
Tub o rain is a licensed product of the Curtis Dojo. Any reproducing of tub o rain without prior consent is strictly prohibited.

The story of how Krista never worked in the garden again.

Every year I try to do a little bit more in the yard. Front flower gardens, tree rings and such. Last year we did a 4x8 raised garden in the back and grew some vegetables. While I enjoy being outside, even when it's 100 degrees, Krista would rather stick to the inside work. This year she's been trying to help out more with the outside stuff. I unloaded to loads of dirt (about 5000 pounds) yesterday and Krista came out to help by raking everything smooth as I shoveled the dirt out of the truck.

Today this happened....

He was a pretty good size snake for just being around the yard. Couldn't get him to stretch out by my shoe but he seemed to be just under 3 feet long.

And that, my friends, ended Krista's commitment to the 2012 Curtis Garden.
